Become a certified Open Water Diver with SSI
This globally recognized certification program is the best way to begin your lifelong adventures as a certified scuba diver. Personalized training is combined with in-water practice sessions to ensure you have the skills and experience required to become truly comfortable underwater. You will earn the SSI Open Water Diver certification.
SSI Open Water Diver – Course Requirements
Pre-Requisites
- To enroll in the SSI Open Water Diver course, participants must meet the following requirements:
Minimum age:
- 10 years old for Junior Open Water Diver
- 15 years old for Open Water Diver
Swimming ability:
- Must be able to swim 200 meters non-stop (any style)
- Must be able to float/tread water for 10 minutes
Health & fitness:
- Reasonably fit for diving
- Must complete the SSI Medical Questionnaire
- If “yes” is answered to certain conditions, a doctor’s approval is required
Digital learning:
- Must create an SSI account and complete the online academic modules before in-water training
Course Duration
Typical training duration:
- Total Course Length: 2.5 – 3 days
Dive Sessions Required
The SSI Open Water Course includes two types of in-water training:
- Confined Water Training (Pool/Shallow Water)
- Open Water Dives
- Minimum required: 4 open water dives
- Depth limits:
- Max 12 meters for Junior OW (10–11 years old)
- Max 18 meters for Open Water Diver
